Mexican Industry: Direct Foreign Investment and Production after NAFTA.

The aim of this investigation is to generate empirical evidence to support the understanding of the effects of the Treaty of Free Trade of North America (TLCAN) on the behavior of the Mexican industry, specifically around the flow of Foreign Direct Investment (IED) and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) over the period 1995 to 2017. The analysis is econometrically supported by the panel data methodology, which exploits the differentiated effects for each branch of industry. The results show a high elasticity of FDI and exports made over a period of time with respect to trade opening; Nevertheless, despite the attainment of a positive elasticity, commercial opening has not stimulated the production of the Mexican industry in a significant way.References
