Abstract

The objective of the article is to describe and synthesize, in a general way, the status of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the context of the open innovation model. This work focuses on some of the ideas of Henry Chesbrough, and that of his followers, one of the most recognized authors in promoting and disseminating this proposal. It highlights the need for SMEs to open their borders to the search and assimilation of external knowledge and take advantage of their internal resources, as well as to create close links of collaboration with their context. These companies need to promote business models that meet the needs of their customers, from the adoption of different strategic exploration and exploitation practices, and in order to increase their competitiveness.
