From divinity to scum. The profile of sex worker in Brazil in 2000 and 2010.

The purpose of this study is to describe prostitution in Brazil in 2000 and in 2010. We use the Brazilian Census micro database and this choice, not by chance, happened due to change in the Brazilian Classification of Occupations (CBO) with the inclusion activity “prostitute.” Socioeconomic and demographic profile of sex workers based on gender, race, education and remuneration is built. We used methods of descriptive statistics, mean comparison test and map to draw the profile of sex workers in Brazil. We conclude that prostitution is an activity with a population of heterogeneous socioeconomic profile, reduced the number of professionals between census periods and that women earn less than men.
