Abstract

Vegetable raw materials emerge as a possibility in the composition fish diets for lowering cost of fish farming production. It is required to establish the feeding habits in the tilapia, according to the gut length and its correlation with the external characteristics for selection and study. The results showed that the animals are herbivores with a preference for plant material, possibly, phytoplankton and microalgae. The gut length was the principal component with 98% of the total variation, suggesting variations in size. Paired correlation was significant (p<0.05) between gut length and external variables of the animals at the Granja 2Roja, while animals in the Granja 1Nilotica increased its weight and size because it has a higher productivity. The animals’ growth is related to environmental conditions, handling and feeding.
